NEW YORK—October 11, 2016Morgan Jamess new release, The Witness: Unfolding the Anatomy of a Killer by Wanda Draper, follows a series of death penalty cases in order to understand why the accused killed and how they got to that point.

True crime9781630479015 television shows are extremely popular, especially given the high crime rate in today’s society. Everyone wants to know what makes someone kill another person. As a professional behavioral witness to murder trials, Dr. Draper has seen her share of inhumanity. She takes some of the most memorable court cases from her own career and shares them in The Witness. It is a work of nonfiction that reads like a novel. It is fast-paced, with quick dialogue and intriguing characters.

Dr. Draper explores how each convicted killer she discusses became who they are today. These people often started out as normal children, just like anyone else. Dr. Draper believes that all children have potential, but that it is unequal opportunity that causes some children to grow up to commit horrific crimes. She takes readers through the behavioral science behind this in a way that is easy to understand for those with no background in the field.

During the trials that Dr. Draper is a part of, the juries must decide the sentence given to the offenders. One major question raised by The Witness is the question of whether there is justice in the world. Is there any justice for the victims of murder? Is it more just to sentence a killer to the death penalty, or to life in prison with no parole? Dr. Draper offers no clear biases when it comes to morality, but instead lets readers form their own opinions based on the evidence she provides.
