Morgan James Radio Episode 009: Rising from the Ashes with Kristen Moeller

Today’s episode is all about overcoming life’s huge obstacles. Listen in on today’s episode as we chat with Kristen Moeller on how she found her path to Morgan James. Learn about her new book Phoenix Rising: Stories of Remarkable Women Walking Through Fire.

How do you go on after you’ve lost everything?

Over several terrifying summers, deadly wildfires raged across Colorado. Lives were lost, and the flames destroyed thousands of homes. When the smoke cleared and only rubble remained, survivors were left trying to find a way forward against devastating loss. The aftermath of that destruction would span many years, and its effects are still felt today.

In “Phoenix Rising,” twenty women share their stories of fire, the terror they felt as flames engulfed their communities, and the dark desperation that followed. And how—in the ensuing weeks and months—they worked to recreate a life from the ashes. Their tales of fear and bravery, of deep compassion and heart-rending grief, offer an uplifting chronicle of human courage and resilience.

In “Phoenix Rising” written by women united by wildfire, they have the privilege of stepping into those moments to stand in the hallways of their shock and fear, grief and disorientation, and then, armed with the wisdom of retrospection, walking out into whatever comes next.

Speaking of what’s coming next, next we’ll learn what she is up to and how she helps people whose path may not have made it to a traditional publishing deal with her involvement with Persona Publishing, the Morgan James self-publishing path.

The Power of Setbacks: How to Turn Your Mess Into Your Success at Any Age

Contributor(s): Stemmle, Karen (Author); Stemmle, Dennis (Author)

Annotation: “The Power of Setbacks” is an inspirational journey highlighting the author’s struggles with cancer and how it unexpectedly led to an amazing new life. It’s all about the intersection of life and work, connecting with family, and redefining what really matters the most in life. “The Power of Setbacks” is filled with practical advice and insights on overcoming challenges, achieving your dreams, and creating your own success.

Their journey began as a distraction. After being diagnosed with cancer, the authors turned to garage and estate sales as a way to distract them from their harsh reality. The sales brought smiles to their faces, kept their minds from wavering with doubt, and over the course of their travels, infused their lives (and their home) with new and exciting objects that carried historical and personal meaning.

But as their house began to bust at its seams, they decided it was time to turn their collection into a business. The next few years were welcomed with sale after sale. And as they learned more, grew more, and dove deeper into the garage and estate sale world, they quickly realized they were onto something. And it was not just limited to garage sales.

“The Power of Setbacks” is the story of their journey. But more importantly, it is a resource guide to build your own small business and then scale it to amazing heights, all while having fun during the process.

Are you unhappy with your current job?

Could you use supplementary income?

Are you ready to make a change?

Whatever the case may be, “The Power of Setbacks” is your handbook to create a new reality for you and your family.

Why do books publish on Tuesdays?

New books almost always pub on Tuesday. But why?

Of all the anonymous days of the week, Tuesday is the most anonymous. It’s not the beginning of a long, dreary week, nor is it the end. It’s not yet hump day, seldom payday, rarely a holiday.

Still, books have pubbed on Tuesdays for as long as I’ve been in this job — eight years already! — and for years before that. Even if they have the books in stock, booksellers are not supposed to sell books before pub date.

I have never known why. So I asked. I asked a lot of people — publishers, publicists, editors, distributors, writers for trade journals. As it turns out, nobody knows, not really. It’s all guesses.

The consensus seems to be that it comes down to three things: ease of distribution, a level playing field for booksellers and a better shot at the bestseller list.

“As far as I have known, it’s always been done this way for shipping,” said Todd Doughty, vice president and executive director of publicity for Doubleday. “A Tuesday on-sale date allows our warehouse to ship to the West Coast with plenty of buffer time in order for the books to arrive prior to on-sale … so that all accounts receive equal treatment.”

Nicholas Latimer of Alfred A. Knopf thought it had to do with The List: “Having the ability to equally distribute a large number of books across the country on the same day allows stores to begin selling big books

[at the same time]. Those sales, when combined, will help place a book higher on national bestseller lists,” he said. “Most stores tabulate and report their sales for any given week on Monday, and then start fresh on Tuesday.”

Jim Milliot, editorial director of Publishers Weekly, thought the idea of a uniform pub date was inspired by other industries.

“They used to release them pretty much any day of the week,” he said. “But they seemed to grow to like the idea of setting one day aside so accounts would know when to have the new titles on the shelves — like movie companies releasing on Friday, or video games Tuesday.”

All of those answers make sense. But perhaps the best response came from Michael Reynolds, editor in chief of Europa Editions.

“Ha, ha. No bloody idea,” he said. (He’s allowed to talk like that; he’s from Australia.) “Just like I don’t know why they eat gnocchi on Thursdays in Rome.

“It probably has something to do with Nielsen, right?” (Nielsen Book Scan tracks sales info for books.)

“Or maybe it’s because Tuesday takes its name from the god of battle.”

Hmmm. Shipping? Bestseller list? Or Nordic god of war? In any case, for the very latest in what to read (including “Commonweath” and “Nutshell”), head out on Tuesday to your favorite bookstore. Help give Tuesday its own identity. For whatever reason.

How to incorporate awesome interviews into your book

You have a great idea for a book – it’s about your area of expertise, you’re passionate about your subject, and you’re already thinking about the cover and marketing. Best of all, you have a large network you can contact for interviews. This is going to be awesome – with your happy clients and your industry contacts, you’ll have so much content that the book will be a breeze! Right?

There is a right way and a wrong way to incorporate interviews into your book and, if you get it wrong, you will:

  • Waste the tens of hours spent questioning your contacts and transcribing their responses;
  • Lose the thousands of words those interviews contributed to your book; and
  • Potentially have to rewrite some new chapters from scratch.

Many of my clients get excited about a general idea for a book – ‘it’s going to be about coping with change,’, ‘it’s about recruitment,’ or ‘it’s going to be about small business’. And, once they have that general idea, they will then reach out to relevant contacts in their network for interviews they can incorporate into the book.

What typically happens at this stage is they’ll prepare a number of vague questions based on the general topic (using the previous examples, these would be questions on change, recruitment or small business), and end up with a thousand words or more of responses from each person.

However, when it comes to actually writing and structuring their book, these interviews don’t fit anywhere. How could they? If you’ve asked them about change in general, how can you fit their interview under any of your five steps to cope with change? If you’ve asked them about recruitment, their interview isn’t going to be specific to resumes or interviews. If you’ve asked them about small business, their interview isn’t going to fit well in the marketing section or the staff management section.

From here, the writer will either:

  1. Randomly sprinkle the interviews throughout the book, not taking into consideration how they relate to the immediate point or chapter; or
  2. Create a brand new chapter and just dump all of the interviews in there.

This creates a lot of frustration for your reader because (if you take the random sprinkling method) they read the interview and can’t figure out why it’s relevant, or (if you take the brand new chapter method) you give them a big chunk of content where they need to search for the information that’s useful to them.

Your job as an author is to pick out the most relevant information for your reader and present it in a way that’s easy to digest. Neither of these methods achieves that.

So what can you do? To find out how to incorporate great interviews (and how to salvage not-so-great interviews), head over to http://www.grammarfactory.com/writing-for-entrepreneurs/book-interviews/

It’s International Literacy Day! Join our movement

Today is International Literacy Day – a UN holiday established 50 years ago to remind us all of the urgency of making literacy a reality for every child in the world.

library-for-all-logoIn honor of this important day, Library For All is making a commitment to deliver our library to 100 schools across Haiti. As you know, Haiti was the country in which Library For All began. As we expand to new regions and continents, we are mindful that we still have many more readers to reach in Haiti.

Today, Library for All is launching a movement to LET HAITI READ.

It takes $1,000 to bring Library For All to an entire school of students, so they need to raise $100,000 to achieve their goal. They can’t do it alone, so please consider supporting them in this commitment, or fundraising on their behalf.

Will you support the movement to LET HAITI READ?

Book Topics That Will Always Be Needed (Unfortunately) – The Steve Laube Agency

With hundreds of thousands of new books published every year in the U.S., very few are on topics never previously covered.

In the Christian publishing world, a quick glimpse back in history will reveal similar patterns of behavior and spiritual need no matter when you decide to stop your time machine.

While many things change, some never change…like people.

Look to Scripture as the starting point. Throughout the pages of the Old and New Testaments are conflicts between races, social classes, issues between men and women and problems rooted in money, sex or power, or all three in combination.

Pride came before the fall six thousand years ago as well as today. And it will still be coming tomorrow and next year.

Marriages collapsed one hundred generations ago because of infidelity and other relationship-fracturing events.

Governments have always had corrupt and virtuous leaders.

As an example how the current racial tensions in the U.S. are not new (unfortunately), here’s a little tidbit from almost one hundred years ago.

July 1917 to be exact.

In a complicated mix of festering racial and labor tension, thousands of white residents of East St. Louis, Illinois marched into the predominantly black areas of town and started to riot. Entire neighborhoods were set ablaze and white persons proceeded to cut fire hoses to prevent firefighters from extinguishing the flames.

If that weren’t bad enough, they started shooting the black residents who tried to escape the inferno. Estimates put the death toll between 50 and 200.

The more you read about this event, it is a glimpse of literal hell on earth.

Often, authors think they must come up with an angle or a creative topic for a book never before addressed, when in reality, the world needs a steady stream of messages on the same topics that have been published over and over again.

Entire ministries or movements have been sustained around core issues as:

  • Fractured relationships
  • Racial reconciliation
  • God-centered marriage
  • God-centered parenting
  • Life not turning out how we expected
  • Coping with tragedy
  • Living a God-centered life
  • The poor
  • Genesis 1:1
  • John 3:16
  • Issues covered in the Sermon on the Mount
  • Issues covered by Jesus in various parables
  • The first commandment
  • The second commandment
  • The third commandment
  • The fourth commandment
  • The fifth commandment

Etc.

The topic is actually a small part of a book. The greater components are who writes it and how well it is written.

Spending too much time on finding a never-before-covered book topic can make an author think that writing quality is not important. And spending little or no effort developing an author platform will be a stumbling block for an agent, publisher and honestly, a reader who looks for a credible, recognizable authority to read, whatever the topic of the book.

In general, book publishing is about singing a familiar song with a new voice.

Sure, there are topics for books that were never part of our collective conversation not many years ago.

But all of the issues confronting our 21st century world are rooted in the same sin that drove Adam and Eve out of Eden.

Maybe we aren’t as different from those who came before us after all. And maybe the problems of this world and the solution to those problems aren’t really as complex as we think.

Maybe what it takes to encourage another Christ-follower to be a growing disciple isn’t so unique and different in 2016 versus say, 1916.

Maybe millennial readers have the same need to grapple with Genesis 1:1, John 3:16, the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount as the hundreds of generations that came before or will come.

A creative, well-written book about an issue or subject covered thousands of times before still wins in the competitive publishing world.

Soellner Tells of Friendship and Loyalty During the Early 20th Century

NEW YORK—August 30, 2016Morgan Jamess new release, The Storm That Shook the World by Walter Soellner, tells the story of two German families and their experiences together in early 20th century Germany and Africa.

9781630478636The Storm That Shook the World is the second book in a four book series based around friendship, loyalty, adventures, and love – sometimes forbidden – involving the two German families of Catholic Markus and Jewish Levi. The two men have only just returned from their adventures in China to find themselves living in the last wonderfully romantic days of the Belle Epoch, the Beautiful Era, before the beginning of the first World War in 1914. They find themselves far from the trenches of France, but no less safe in the wilds and wars as soldiers in Kaiser Wilhelm’s African colonies. Not only are the two men facing challenges in Africa – where loved ones face betrayal, and terror threatens their lives, but back at the grand Levi estate deep in the forests of Bavaria, the two families struggle with hardships and dangers unforeseen.

The Storm That Shook the World is a thrilling historical novel filled with romance and friendships that are easy to relate to, even when times have changed and a century has passed. The main focus is on the loyalty and friendship between the two protagonists and their families, but along with their story, there are also strong important female roles and a storyline that follows, very closely, the true history telling of important pre-war and WWI history with many historic characters included, in little known but impactful places.

Soellner is able to create a book that is unlike many other historically based novels, focusing on more than one historic event throughout his four book series. He is able to explore a strong friendship over many years and an abundance of troubles that very few books manage. With its exciting plot and loyalty focused protagonists, The Storm That Shook the World teaches people about history and the importance and strength of loyalty and friendship.

If you would like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview with Walter Soellner, please call Nickcole Watkins at 516.900.5674.
